you are a writer. let’s start by claiming it!
Feeling creatively blocked, or shrinking at the title of ‘writer’ or ‘artist,’ is so often connected to distrusting our own abilities, creativity, and potential for growth.
We might have learned this from foundational experiences where others doubted us or shamed our creative process. That younger version of you, whether it was 20 years ago or last week, received the message that you couldn’t trust yourself... and maybe it stuck.
So, what would it look like to create an intentional practice of trusting yourself?
This is where we’ll begin.
-
Write a commitment of trust to yourself and your creative practice. “I trust myself to...”
Now, let’s prove it! Remind your brain of all the ways you’ve shown up for your creative practice in the past year. Make a list of all the examples you can think of.
Self-rejection is when we proactively reject ourselves or our creative work in order to protect ourselves from being rejected by others. Are there examples of when you’ve done this? What emotions came up for you? Are there any ways you’ve repeated this reaction with your creative practice?
-
Choose one of the prompts above and write 400-500 words in any format you prefer.
Find an example of a piece of writing or art you’ve created in the past two years that you’re proud of.
Send both of these samples to Kimm at kimmtopping@gmail.com at least 48 hours before your first session.
When we say creative practice, we mean ANYTHING CREATIVE!
This could be writing, but it also includes trying a new recipe, solving a problem for a friend, creating a collage, reading a book in a genre you usually avoid, and much more. Anything that gets your creativity and imagination going is relevant here.
